AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced October 1 that they have signed an agreement for a joint venture focused on satellite-enabled service in underserved parts of the United States. The announcement was issued from Dallas, Bellevue and New York.

Paul Roth will lead the venture as interim CEO while the companies seek a permanent chief executive. Each carrier will have representation on its board.

The companies said the effort would complement their ground-based mobile networks. It follows their May plan to combine limited spectrum resources to extend satellite connectivity.

Existing agreements between carriers and satellite providers will remain in place, and the partners may continue their separate connectivity efforts. The announcement describes the venture’s goals; it does not establish that expanded service is already available to customers.
