The Houston Cougars posted a stunning 77-6 victory over the visiting Southern Jaguars on Saturday at TDECU Stadium, marking a decisive 2-0 start to their season. The game was defined by an early offensive explosion, with Houston scoring 28 points in the first quarter alone to establish a lead they never relinquished.
The final tally of 77 points for the Cougars stands in stark contrast to the six points managed by the Jaguars, who dropped to a 1-2 record.
Weigman and Young Lead the Charge
Quarterback Conner Weigman anchored the Houston attack, completing nine of 12 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns. His chemistry with receiver Koby Young was particularly effective; Young finished with three receptions for 54 yards and two scores. One of Young’s touchdowns came on a 43-yard strike, while another resulted from a seven-yard connection in the second quarter.
Weigman also connected with Patrick Overmyer and Amare Thomas for first-quarter scores, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
Rushing attack provided additional depth, with Re'Shaun Sanford II and Makhi Hughes both finding the end zone on one-yard and nine-yard runs in the opening period. In the third quarter, Keisean Henderson added a 54-yard rushing touchdown, while DJ Butler and John Hebert contributed additional scores via the ground game.
Zane Smith also contributed to the rushing effort, carrying the ball 10 times for 69 yards.
