Dallas ISD said high school students in its Automotive Technician Program of Study will gain supervised, hands-on experience with Dallas Area Rapid Transit under a new High School Student Bus Maintenance Externship Program.
In a Sept. 15 announcement on The Hub, the district’s news site, Dallas ISD described the initiative as a first-of-its-kind partnership connecting students with DART bus maintenance professionals.
Oswaldo Alvarenga, Dallas ISD deputy chief of strategic initiatives, said in the district’s announcement that students learn most when they tackle real-world problems. Partnering with DART, he said, supports the next generation of skilled technicians and creates immediate hands-on impact in high-demand career pathways.
According to Dallas ISD, participating students will receive supervised training during the semester in areas such as multipoint vehicle inspections, engine fundamentals and interior climate-system maintenance. The district said working alongside DART professionals is intended to build technical knowledge, workplace experience and leadership skills that can help prepare students for high-demand careers.
