The State Fair of Texas begins Friday by hosting numerous local groups on three separate stages. The event provides a financial opportunity for artists while allowing them to reach new audiences during a period of increased expenses in the music industry.
State Fair Records, a Dallas-based label, handles the booking process for the musical acts. Courtney Wright, who works with the label, confirmed that performances will occur throughout the 24-day event and are included in the general admission price.
The fair is adjusting ticket prices this year to assist families facing inflation and elevated fuel costs. These same economic pressures are affecting musicians, who struggle with high travel expenses and the closure of many independent venues.
Ricky Bradley, bassist and frontman for the Texas Zephyrs, noted that touring has become difficult due to gas prices. He explained that bands previously relied on selling merchandise and physical records on the road, but rising fuel costs have made that strategy unviable.
Wright highlighted that increasing tour expenses and the disappearance of small venues have created challenges for artists. The fair aims to offer a paycheck and a platform for bands to connect with listeners who might not otherwise encounter their music.
