Hawks erase 23-point deficit, beat Spurs 123-116 in preseason

Atlanta outscored San Antonio 30-21 in the fourth quarter of Thursday's exhibition at Frost Bank Center. Asa Newell scored 16 for the Hawks and Dylan Harper had 16 for the Spurs.

Hawks rally in San Antonio

The Atlanta Hawks erased a big early deficit and beat the San Antonio Spurs 123-116 in a preseason game Thursday, Oct. 8, at Frost Bank Center, where 18,354 fans watched the Spurs open their exhibition slate.

San Antonio led by as many as 23 points and was up 39-20 after one quarter. Atlanta scored 42 points in the second quarter to cut the halftime gap to 69-62, then pulled within 95-93 entering the fourth.

The Hawks outscored the Spurs 30-21 over the final 12 minutes. San Antonio's 21 turnovers, more than double Atlanta's 10, gave the visitors extra possessions throughout.

Asa Newell led the Hawks with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and Kingston Flemings had 15 points and five assists. Dyson Daniels grabbed 11 rebounds.

For the Spurs, Dylan Harper scored 16 points with four assists, while Stephon Castle and David Jones Garcia added 14 each. Keldon Johnson led San Antonio with seven rebounds.

As a preseason game, the result does not count in the standings.
