SMU went into its open week with another home conference win Saturday, beating Boston College 25–16 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in a game decided as much by field position and defensive disruption as by offensive production.

The No. 21 Mustangs improved to 4–1 overall and 2–1 in the ACC. Boston College dropped to 2–3 and 0–2. SMU’s postgame notes list the program at 9–0 in ACC home games.

The numbers beneath the score were less comfortable. Boston College outgained SMU 322–218, while the Mustangs managed 58 rushing yards and 160 through the air. SMU answered with five sacks and 13 tackles for loss, repeatedly pushing the Eagles backward even as the visitors accumulated more total yardage.

SMU drove 75 yards for the first touchdown, fell behind 10–6, then moved 83 yards in 15 plays to regain the lead. That second-quarter touchdown gave the Mustangs a 13–10 advantage that held through halftime.

After the break, the field shortened. A fumble recovery set up a three-play, 13-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter. A fourth-quarter possession beginning at Boston College’s 41 ended in another touchdown, pushing SMU ahead 25–10 with 4:37 left.

Boston College still had chances. An early fourth-quarter trip inside the SMU 10 ended without points on fourth down. The Eagles later completed a 75-yard touchdown drive, but their unsuccessful two-point try left a nine-point deficit with 2:07 remaining. SMU recovered the ensuing onside kick and closed out the game.

The announced attendance was 27,942, and the official gamebook recorded rainy conditions. SMU now has a week without a game before hosting Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff time remained to be announced Sunday morning.

Analysis: The two second-half touchdown drives covered only 54 yards combined, illustrating the value of the defense and return game creating manageable fields. The open week also arrives with clear repair work: the Mustangs scored four touchdowns but converted only one extra-point kick, leaving a tighter finish than the touchdown count alone might suggest.
