SMU survived a 38–36 third set Wednesday and handed No. 2 Pittsburgh its first volleyball loss of the season, setting up a quick rematch in Dallas.
The sixth-ranked Mustangs won 21–25, 25–19, 38–36, 25–22 on Oct. 7. SMU improved to 13–2 overall and 5–0 in the ACC; Pitt fell to 14–1 and 4–1.
The extended third set put SMU one set from victory. The Mustangs finished the job in the fourth, ending Pitt’s 58-match home winning streak, according to SMU Athletics.
Five Mustangs reached double figures in kills. SMU hit .347 and held a 12.5–6 edge in blocks, combining enough scoring options with pressure at the net to extend its own winning streak to seven matches.
