No. 5 SMU takes an 11-match ACC winning streak on the road Friday, Oct. 2, visiting Syracuse at 5 p.m. Central before a Sunday match at Boston College at noon Central. Both matches will stream on ACCNX.
The Mustangs begin their first conference road weekend at 10–2 overall and 2–0 in league play. Syracuse is 5–6 and 0–2, while Boston College stands at 10–3 and 1–1.
SMU’s most recent victory offered a reminder that its early conference success has required adjustments. Cal hit .538 in the opening set at Moody Coliseum on Sept. 27 and won it 25–19. The Mustangs then held the visitors to a combined .132 hitting percentage across the next three sets.
SMU won those sets 25–16, 25–20 and 25–15. It finished the match hitting .358 and led Cal in kills, aces and digs, according to the university’s recap.
Analysis: can the response travel?
That reversal is more informative than treating the top-five ranking as a prediction. Cal established that it could score freely at the start; SMU established that the same conditions would not last for the whole match.
The numbers show a successful response, although they do not identify a single tactical change responsible for it. The road trip asks whether the Mustangs can produce that kind of correction in a different gym, with fewer of the comforts that come with playing at home.
