The Dallas Cowboys began the 2026 NFL season with a 28-20 defeat against the New York Giants, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer pointing to execution problems and errors by several young players after the game.
Schottenheimer said Dallas did not meet its standard and described the team's overall performance as poor. He said young players made mistakes, including allowing Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to escape the pocket, while the Cowboys also failed several times to defend a flat route.
Dart completed the game with 230 passing yards and 54 rushing yards. His ability to extend plays created challenges for a Dallas defense that was seeking a stronger opening after allowing an NFL-high 30.1 points per game in 2025.
Penalties added to Dallas' problems. The Cowboys were flagged eight times for 85 yards, including a taunting call against Javonte Williams after his touchdown. The penalty moved Brandon Aubrey's extra-point attempt farther from the goal posts.
Schottenheimer accepted responsibility for the team's discipline issues and said the coaching staff must help the young players improve quickly. He characterized the loss as a humbling result and said Dallas did not start well on either side of the ball.
