Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is considered unlikely to play against Louisiana Tech as he continues recovering from an ankle injury, but his status could improve before the team’s Big 12 opener at Colorado on Sept. 26.
Lagway sustained a high-ankle sprain during Baylor’s 17-16 season-opening loss to Auburn. He remained in that game and finished with 333 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. A wrap was visible on his ankle afterward.
The injury kept Lagway out of Baylor’s next game against Prairie View A&M. Nate Bennett started in his place and completed 24 of 36 passes for 314 yards in a 44-3 Baylor victory. Bennett also threw three touchdowns and added a rushing score.
Baylor is scheduled to play Louisiana Tech on Saturday, with Lagway listed as doubtful. Bennett is expected to start again if Lagway cannot play. Baylor coach Dave Aranda said Lagway felt good during a Sunday practice, and the quarterback was expected to take part in team practices during the week.
The report said Lagway is trending toward being available for the Colorado matchup, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Mountain Time on Sept. 26. Colorado will play Northwestern before facing Baylor, while Baylor is preparing for its final nonconference game against Louisiana Tech.
