SMU senior Enzo Panozzo was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s co-defensive player of the week after the Mustangs’ 1-0 victory over NC State, SMU Athletics reported. The conference announced the honor Tuesday, which Panozzo shares with Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly.
Panozzo captained SMU’s defense in the team’s ACC home opener and scored the game’s only goal. The Sarasota, Florida, native helped hold NC State to eight shots, including two on target, as SMU recorded its fifth shutout of the season.
The honor is Panozzo’s first ACC weekly award. It is SMU’s second conference weekly award this season.
After the victory, SMU rose to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Mustangs are 7-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in ACC play, and are scheduled to resume conference action Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
