Florida State coach Mike Norvell said the Seminoles are concentrating on their upcoming road game at Alabama after Michael Alford was fired as athletic director. Norvell also said the recent loss to SMU has not changed his confidence in the team, which is 1-1.
Norvell praised Alford and his wife, Laura, for their work with the program and said the team would continue its preparations while Bruce Warwick serves as interim athletic director. Norvell described Warwick as an experienced professional and said he expects him to perform well in the position. The players were off Monday, and Norvell said he plans to discuss the leadership change with them Tuesday.
Florida State will be without freshman linebackers Izayia Williams and Daylen Green for the remainder of the season. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson is expected to return this year but will miss an extended period. Norvell said the absences could create opportunities for other players on defense and special teams.
Speaking about the SMU game, Norvell called the result disappointing but said it did not alter his view of the Seminoles. He said he has confidence in what the team can accomplish and was pleased with quarterback Ashton Daniels' work during the week, particularly his approach in practice and his attention to the areas he can control.
Norvell characterized Alabama's defense as fast and explosive, with a larger defensive front than the team had last season. He said Florida State will need to win individual matchups, preserve offensive balance and produce big plays. He also identified Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell as a major threat when running outside the pocket.
