For 82 minutes on Saturday night, FC Dallas could not find a way past Angus Gunn. Then Petar Musa needed five minutes to settle the match.
Musa curled a shot into the top corner in the 83rd minute and converted a penalty in the 88th, and FC Dallas beat the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 at Toyota Stadium. Santiago Moreno added a third goal in stoppage time.
The two goals were Musa's 21st and 22nd of the regular season, a career high. San Jose's match report logged the penalty a minute later than FC Dallas did, in the 89th.
The breakthrough
San Jose had the better early looks. FC Dallas goalkeeper Daniel, who joined the club from the Earthquakes in July, saved Beau Leroux's header in the 18th minute and took the ball off Ousseni Bouda's foot on a breakaway 10 minutes later.
Musa had his own openings before halftime. He set up Joaquín Valiente in front of the six-yard box in the 39th minute, but Valiente skied it, and four minutes later Gunn came off his line to smother Musa's shot from the edge of the area.
The opener came in transition. Bernard Kamungo picked up the ball in the left half-space and cut it back, and Musa opened his body from the top of the box and curled it into the top right corner. Moreno, who began the move, was credited with a secondary assist.
Kaick was fouled in the box moments later, and Musa sent the penalty low to the bottom right corner. Moreno pounced on a San Jose turnover in the fourth minute of stoppage time to finish the scoring.
Records on the line
The first goal was FC Dallas' 56th of the season, breaking a club record of 55 that stood from 1997 and was matched in 2014. Musa had tied that mark with his stoppage-time penalty at Houston on Oct. 17. The club now has 58.
He now has 56 goals for Dallas, which ties Raúl Díaz Arce for the third-most by a player in his first three seasons in the league, according to the club. Saturday was also Musa's ninth multigoal game for FC Dallas, tying Jesús Ferreira for second in team history.
