The Dallas Cowboys have a new name at the top of their record book, and they wrote it into history in front of 93,188 fans at AT&T Stadium.
Dak Prescott threw four touchdown passes in a 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, and the fourth, a 24-yard strike to CeeDee Lamb with the game on the line, was the 249th of his career. That broke Tony Romo's franchise record of 248, according to The Associated Press.
The win evened Dallas at 1-1 a week after a 28-20 loss to the New York Giants, and it came in the Cowboys' home opener.
The record, and the moment
Prescott was nearly flawless. He completed 26 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, and he split the scoring evenly: two touchdowns to Lamb and two to tight end Jake Ferguson.
The record throw came at the right time. Washington had pulled within 30-20 with about nine minutes left, and Prescott answered with an 11-play drive that ended with Lamb in the end zone. Lamb, whose 37 touchdown catches from Prescott are the most of any player, handed his quarterback the ball.
"That made me emotional," Prescott told reporters afterward, the AP reported. He said he had also been emotional before the game, thinking about his late mother and the chance of a four-touchdown day.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said the celebration in the locker room said as much about the person as the passer. "You can't talk about Dak, the player, without starting with the man," he said.
Prescott, 33 and in his 11th season, also extended his home winning streak against NFC East opponents to 20 games, according to the AP.
