SMU’s women have a podium place to defend at their own meet. The Mustangs finished Friday’s opening session of the SMU Classic third in the six-team field, earning 133 points at Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center in Dallas.

No. 18 Arizona State led with 191 points, followed by Arkansas at 152. SMU stood ahead of Arizona, Virginia Tech and Missouri after the Oct. 9 session.

Five podium finishes kept the Mustangs in that position. Their 800-yard freestyle relay placed second in 7:12.81, and SMU also took second in the 200-yard freestyle A final in 1:46.70.

Third-place finishes came in the 50-yard freestyle A final, the 100-yard butterfly A final and the 400-yard medley relay. It was a spread of results across individual events and relays rather than one standout race carrying the entire evening.

These are opening-day standings, not the final meet result. The concluding session is scheduled for 10 a.m. Central on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the same venue.
