North Texas family entertainment is no longer a single-park story. Collin and Tarrant counties now host overlapping branded attractions that compete for the same day-trip dollars, hotel nights, and holiday weekends.
Dallas Morning News business coverage in June 2026 framed Universal Kids Resort's Frisco opening as entry into a "rapidly growing" North Texas family entertainment sector that already included Peppa Pig Theme Park in North Richland Hills and Six Flags Over Texas. Capital, brands, and corridors are splitting that family pipeline across county lines.
Collin County's permanent stack
Universal Kids Resort opened July 1, 2026, in Frisco on a roughly 97-acre Dallas North Tollway site: about 32 acres of theme park plus a 300-room on-site hotel, aimed at children about ages 3 to 8.
Universal Destinations & Experiences announced the project in January 2023, began construction around November 2023, and revealed the name in December 2023 — roughly three years from announcement to opening.
Universal general manager Dan Cuffe cited more than 4,100 construction jobs with more than 85 percent local North Texas hiring, and operations staffing that was expected to rise from about 1,200 team members before opening toward roughly 1,500 at opening. Dallas Morning News preview reporting cited one-day passes starting at $54.99 as of June 2026.
Frisco also hosts KidZania Dallas inside Stonebriar Centre. The brand uses a Dallas name, but the location is 2601 Preston Road in Frisco. Soft opening came in mid-November 2019, with a Nov. 23, 2019, grand opening.
The first U.S. KidZania occupies about 85,000 square feet of indoor career role-play for children roughly ages 4 to 14. A mall-anchored model pulls different dwell patterns than a Tollway destination park: shopping-center parking, shorter indoor sessions, and less dependence on overnight hotel packages.
Tarrant County's Merlin and indoor pipeline
Merlin Entertainments opened PEPPA PIG Theme Park Dallas-Fort Worth to the public March 1, 2025, at 8851 26 Boulevard in North Richland Hills — about 14 acres of preschool-focused outdoor park next to NRH20 Family Water Park. FOX 4 later reported USA Today Readers' Choice Top 10 Best New Attractions recognition for the 2025 cohort.
Merlin already clustered indoor family brands at Grapevine Mills — PEPPA PIG World of Play, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Dallas/Fort Worth, and SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium — so the North Richland Hills outdoor park expands an existing metro footprint rather than arriving cold.
North Richland Hills economic development has positioned Peppa Pig with eventual cross-access and shared promotion alongside NRH20, and later welcomed Malibu Jack's as another family amenity. Malibu Jack's soft-opening target was June 16, 2025, at 8651 Airport Freeway; the indoor park is marketed at roughly 135,000 to 137,000 square feet under Five Star Parks & Attractions.
Temporary product versus destination capital
Paramount Products & Experiences and Egan Productions announced Aug. 20, 2026, a Plano launch for PAW Patrol Rescue Pups: An Immersive Experience at 2712 N Central Expressway. The limited-time immersive is scheduled to debut in fall 2026, remain through the holiday season, then leave for a multi-city tour in early 2027. Average visit length is about 45 minutes to an hour.
Ticket prices and footprint were not disclosed in the announcement. The experience sits in retail space near the DART Parker Road station — a short-run corridor product, not a permanent theme park.
Metro competition is therefore multi-product: destination parks with hotels in Frisco, a mall indoor city at Stonebriar, an outdoor preschool park and a large indoor park in North Richland Hills, Merlin's Grapevine indoor cluster, and short-run immersives that rent retail near transit in Plano.
