Two of the top city jobs that the Dallas City Council fills itself, now held on an interim basis, could get permanent occupants next week.
The council's Oct. 28 voting agenda includes a resolution appointing Baron Eliason as the city's inspector general for two years, along with a second resolution to appoint a city auditor, also for two years. Both resolutions were posted with the salary and start date left blank, to be filled in when the council acts.
Inspector general
Eliason has run the inspector general's office on an interim basis. The council's Ad Hoc Committee on Administrative Affairs interviewed the finalists for the job in a closed session on Oct. 6, then returned to open session, where a majority of the committee voted to recommend him, according to an Oct. 15 memo from committee chair Jesse Moreno to Mayor Eric Johnson.
Johnson asked City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert to place the item on the agenda in a memo dated Oct. 20.
In August, Eliason told the council's ethics committee that the office had identified roughly $227,000 a vendor had billed above its contract, plus another $579,000 in projected overpayments it counted as future losses avoided, Dallas Express reported at the time.
City auditor
The auditor's pick is less settled. The Finance Committee interviewed finalists behind closed doors on Oct. 19 and, back in open session, a majority voted to send two names to the full council: Rory Galter and John Provan, according to a memo from committee chair Chad West. The city's October memos list Galter as interim city auditor.
The resolution on the agenda leaves the appointee's name blank, so the choice between the two will be made from the dais.
