Nathan Johnson, the Democratic state senator from Dallas, will become Texas attorney general in January after defeating Republican state Sen. Mayes Middleton of Galveston, according to unofficial returns.
With 99% of precincts reporting, Johnson had about 52% of the vote to Middleton's 46%, KPRC Click2Houston's returns show. He is the first Democrat elected attorney general since 1994, The Texas Tribune reported. Results are unofficial until the statewide canvass.
Middleton conceded Wednesday, writing on social media that he had called Johnson the night before to concede and wish him well.
In an interview with CBS News Texas, Johnson said his first priority is rebuilding the office's staff, followed by a review of the cases and investigations left by Ken Paxton. He described his campaign message as "a return to respect for the rule of law."
