Dallas’s legislative tracker lists an extension of Southern Methodist University’s support for a police virtual-reality training project as approved, with the additional term running from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.
The agreement keeps SMU’s Simmons School of Education and Human Development involved in consulting and technical assistance for the Dallas Police Department’s Virtual Reality De-escalation Site-Based Initiative Grant Project. The city lists the extension as having no cost consideration to the city.
According to the staff report, the project uses police data and input from trainers and other participants to develop scenarios that call for de-escalation skills. The simulator records trainees’ decisions and actions so instructors can review responses and provide feedback.
