Community Movement Builders, a Dallas organization, has been buying solar-powered streetlights and putting them up in dark neighborhoods it says have been left behind, with the aim of discouraging crime.

WFAA reported on the effort after a weekend shooting in Dallas. Dallas police said six people were wounded at about 3:10 a.m. on Oct. 4 at a party in the 1400 block of South Barry Avenue. Dallas Fire-Rescue took at least three of them to a hospital, and the other three got there on their own. Police said all six were stable and that none of the wounds appeared life-threatening.

According to investigators, people in a car and people at the party fired at each other, and the car crashed soon afterward. Police have not said whether its driver is one of the six who were hurt. No one has been arrested, and detectives said they are following several leads.

Yafeuh Balogun, who coordinates work for Community Movement Builders, told WFAA that people in neighborhoods like these feel they have been left behind. "I hear not enough funds, not enough infrastructure, not enough education, not enough opportunities and resources flow into the community," Balogun said.

The group paid for the lights itself and installed them in neighborhoods with little street lighting. WFAA reported that people living near the new lights have noticed them.
