An armed man died Wednesday afternoon after shooting himself during a confrontation with Dallas police at a motel off Interstate 35E, police said. One officer fired at the man during the encounter, and it is not yet known whether that shot struck him.

The encounter happened at the Mustang Inn in the 400 block of South R.L. Thornton Freeway. In an early post on X, the department said the suspect had been hit after officers opened fire. At a news briefing around 2 p.m., Executive Assistant Chief Terrence Rhodes gave a fuller account, CBS News Texas reported.

Rhodes said the man, described only as being in his mid-30s, was wanted on several warrants for narcotics and parole violations, and that officers used Flock license plate camera technology to find him. When officers arrived, Rhodes said, the man had a long rifle and was told to stand down. One officer fired, and the man then pulled out another gun and fatally shot himself, according to Rhodes.

No officers were hurt. Police have not said whether the man fired at officers. The investigation is continuing.
