Tommy Castellanos’ role at Texas Tech remains unsettled after two games that included three touchdowns, a failed passing attempt and a changing place in the offense. The veteran quarterback was added late in preseason camp as an emergency backup to Will Hammond, who remains the Red Raiders’ starter while recovering from a torn ACL.
Castellanos started against Houston last Friday, but his appearance ended with an interception on the opening play after he tried to throw the ball out of bounds. He later returned to handle red-zone plays and scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter.
Coach Joey McGuire said after the game that Hammond would continue as the starting quarterback, while Castellanos would be used in specific offensive packages. Texas Tech initially brought Castellanos in after the transfer portal closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation was resolved, according to Red Raiders Wire.
