Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway will miss the Week 2 game against Prairie View A&M because of a high-ankle sprain sustained in the season-opening loss to Auburn. Nate Bennett is set to make his first career start for the Bears.
Lagway completed 27 of 54 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Baylor’s 17-16 defeat. He finished the game despite the ankle injury, but the injury later led to him being listed as doubtful before he was ruled out.
Baylor coach Dave Aranda had described Lagway as day-to-day earlier in the week, and a source told On3 that the quarterback had been attempting to play through the injury. The report said Lagway was viewed as doubtful against Prairie View A&M, particularly with Baylor’s Big 12 opener against Colorado approaching.
Baylor scored a touchdown in the final seconds against Auburn and attempted a two-point conversion instead of trying to send the game to overtime. The attempt failed. Aranda has not indicated whether Lagway’s injury played a role in that decision.
