Baylor has signed Ukrainian center Kate Koval after her departure from LSU, where she said the addition of a Russian player prompted her to reconsider remaining with the program. Baylor announced the signing Saturday.
Koval said in a social media post that Russia's war against Ukraine has directly affected her family and community. She wrote that people close to her had been killed or injured and that locations where she grew up and began playing basketball had been damaged by missile strikes.
The NCAA approved a legislative relief waiver earlier this week, allowing Koval to enter the transfer portal outside the usual window, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press anonymously because the person was not authorized to discuss it publicly.
Baylor coach Nicki Collen said Koval's 6-foot-5 frame, scoring near the basket, rebounding, shot blocking and ability to contribute from the perimeter will add to the team's offense and defense. Collen also described Koval as a strong student who cares about others.
Koval averaged 8.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game for LSU last season. She began her college career at Notre Dame, where she averaged 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds during the 2024-25 season. Further details about her Baylor eligibility and role were not provided.
