Former LSU center Kate Koval has committed to Baylor after the NCAA approved her transfer waiver, allowing her to move despite announcing her departure after the April deadline for entering the transfer portal. Baylor announced the commitment Saturday.
Koval, who is Ukrainian, chose to leave LSU after the Tigers signed 17-year-old Russian post player Anna Minaeva. Koval explained on Sept. 2 that the decision was connected to the war involving Ukraine and Russia. Her father serves as a drone operator in the Ukrainian military, according to her statement.
Baylor coach Nicki Collen said Koval can contribute near the basket and on the perimeter. Collen also pointed to Koval’s rebounding, defense and passing, saying, "We are beyond excited to welcome Kate to Baylor."
The Bears finished last season 25-9 and lost four starters to graduation. Senior guard Taliah Scott is the only returning starter. She led Baylor in scoring last season at 19.7 points per game.
Koval played her freshman season at Notre Dame, where she earned a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team, before joining LSU for the 2025-26 season. She played in 35 games for the Tigers and started 17, averaging 8.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks while shooting 56% from the field.
