The Houston Texans have moved linebacker Jake Hummel to injured reserve because of a groin injury sustained in the team's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The transaction comes before Houston's Week 3 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.
Hummel did not participate in six consecutive team practices while dealing with the injury. His placement on injured reserve means he will miss at least four games, including the Colts matchup, Houston's Week 4 home game against the Dallas Cowboys, and road games against the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.
The move gives the Texans four linebackers on either injured reserve or the physically unable to perform list before the season reaches its third game. E.J. Speed has a long-term quad injury from the offseason that could keep him out for the 2026 season.
K.C. Ossai went on injured reserve before the season, while Henry To'oTo'o was placed there after suffering a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.
Hummel has primarily contributed on special teams and has played 150 defensive snaps during his career. With him unavailable, Houston is set to have five healthy linebackers on its 53-man roster for the Colts game: Azeez Al-Shaair, Jake Hansen, Jamal Hill, Wade Woodaz and Aiden Fisher. Hill recently joined the active roster from the practice squad, while Woodaz and Fisher are first-year draft picks.
