Dallas Water Utilities will begin mailing notices in early October to more than 200,000 customers whose water service-line materials remain classified as unknown, according to a Sept. 30 city announcement.

The utility is asking recipients to complete its Customer Service Line Survey. The survey explains how to find and identify the pipe entering a home or building and lets customers upload photographs for the utility to review.

An unknown classification means the utility lacks enough information to confirm the pipe material. It does not, by itself, mean lead has been found in the line or detected in drinking water, the city said. DWU said its inventory work has not identified any lead service lines to date.

The city’s Lead and Copper Program page links to both the public service-line inventory and the customer survey. Questions can be directed to DWU Water Quality at 214-670-0915 or DWUWaterQuality@dallas.gov.

The mailing is part of the utility’s continuing inventory work following its initial 2024 inventory. The city says an expanded baseline inventory is due Nov. 1, 2027.
