George Pickens's long-term future still sits on Jerry Jones's desk. Ryan Flournoy's near-term future does not.
ESPN's Todd Archer reported Thursday from Frisco that the Cowboys agreed to a one-year extension with Flournoy worth up to $6 million, according to sources, after Jordan Schultz first reported the agreement. The receiver who finished last season as Dallas's No. 3 wideout is now under contract for 2027 - the same year Pickens could be gone if a multiyear deal never materializes.
The Pickens math
Pickens is playing 2026 on the $27.3 million franchise tag and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent afterward. Dallas can apply the tag again at roughly $32 million, Archer reported. Jones has said repeatedly that he wants Pickens in Dallas for years, but finding the right long-term structure has been difficult.
In that gap, Flournoy's extension functions as insurance: a pass catcher already secured should Pickens not return next season, ESPN noted.
That is not a claim Flournoy replaces Pickens's production. It is roster architecture. Lamb and Pickens remain the headliners. Flournoy's value is continuity at the next tier when the top of the board is unsettled.
Production that forced the conversation
Flournoy caught 40 passes for 475 yards and four touchdowns last season in the No. 3 role, with 100-yard games at the Jets and Lions. He was a 2024 sixth-round pick who was released before last season, re-signed to the practice squad, and earned playing time through special teams before winning Prescott's trust.
He enters this year as the unquestioned No. 3 behind Lamb and Pickens.
The same Thursday brought a three-year, $18 million extension for tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford with $12.075 million guaranteed through 2029, per ESPN sources. NBC 5 likewise reported the Spann-Ford agreement and noted he and Jake Ferguson are now under contract through 2029. Ferguson's four-year, $52 million extension from last year anchors the position; Luke Schoonmaker heads toward unrestricted free agency after this season.
