The American League's last open door slammed shut Thursday night, and it left the Texas Rangers with a three-game math problem.
Chicago's White Sox clinched a playoff berth with a 9-1 win at Kansas City, the Associated Press reported, and Cleveland sealed its own postseason ticket with a 1-0 victory at Boston. Those results filled the American League's wild-card slots.
In the AL West, the Rangers and Houston Astros finished Thursday tied at 79-80 after Texas beat the New York Mets 3-1 in its home finale and Houston outlasted the Athletics 7-5 in West Sacramento, according to the AP roundup carried by Sportsnet. Only the division winner advances. The loser goes home.
Houston already owns the season-series edge, 9-4, so a tie after 162 games belongs to the Astros. Texas has to finish ahead outright - a full game better across the final weekend - to reach October.
What Thursday changed
Before the late games, the West race still carried a theoretical wild-card shadow. Once the Guardians and White Sox locked in, that shadow disappeared. Heavy Sports, updating Friday morning, framed the weekend as winner-take-all with no fallback for either club.
The Rangers stopped a three-game slide behind Josh Jung's two-run homer in the first and Corey Seager's solo shot in the sixth, the AP reported from Arlington. Kumar Rocker worked five innings; Jordan Montgomery closed a perfect ninth for his second big-league save. Manager Skip Schumaker, speaking afterward, pointed the club toward Friday rather than the bracket.
"I'm thinking about tomorrow, winning tomorrow. That's it," he said, per CBS Texas' AP account. "Jacob deGrom's on the hill."
Houston answered later on the West Coast. Lucas Spence, called up Wednesday, hit the first three home runs of his major-league career in the same game, and Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes also went deep in the 7-5 win, the AP reported. The Astros' magic number to clinch the West is three because the tiebreaker already sits in their pocket.
The three-game board
Texas opens a series at Minnesota on Friday night with deGrom (11-10) scheduled against Joe Ryan, CBS Texas and other outlets reported. The Twins sit at 75-84 and are eliminated. Houston continues its set against the Athletics (63-96) in Sacramento, with three games left after Thursday's win.
The scenario grid is narrow. If Houston goes 3-0, the Astros are in regardless of what Texas does. If Houston goes 2-1, the Rangers must sweep Minnesota.
A 1-2 Astros finish means Texas needs at least two wins. If Houston is swept, one Rangers victory is enough. Texas cannot survive an 0-3 weekend no matter what Houston does - Heavy Sports laid out that matrix Friday morning after the standings settled.
