A group of Dallas residents and local leaders is initiating a citizen petition to amend the city charter. The proposed change would require the local government to continue operating out of the current Dallas City Hall structure. The Save City Hall Coalition stated in a press release that the goal is to preserve the building, which was designed by architect I.M.
Pei. The group aims to place this charter amendment on the ballot for the May 2027 election.
The petition drive is scheduled to begin on October 2, when the coalition plans to file a notice of intent with the Dallas city secretary. Once the process starts, the organization has a 60-day window to gather 20,000 signatures from registered voters. This effort comes while city officials are currently evaluating the future of the existing city hall property.
Several prominent figures are involved in presenting the initial letter to city officials. The list includes Texas state Rep. John Bryant, Dallas County Commissioner Elba Garcia, former city council members Veletta Forsythe-Lill and Erik Wilson, and Steve Atkinson, a former president of the Dallas Gay & Lesbian Alliance.
The coalition argues that the building's architectural significance warrants its preservation and asserts that the structure can coexist with economic development in the surrounding area.
